The Staffordshire village of Shenstone is situated midway between Lichfield and Birmingham. In the early part of the 19th century the village staged a race meeting on Wednesday 28th June 1820 which was noted in ‘The County History of Staffordshire’ S24 and would have included many of the horses engaged in similar meetings at Lichfield and Brewood. The stables at Chillington Hall, near Brewood, were owned by Mr Giffard a keen horse racing enthusiast who is likely to have had entries, although the meeting could also have attracted hunters from Albrighton, Wellington and Shifnal, as well as Shropshire horses owned by the likes of the Myttons.
